What's in my Bag + Rue La La Handbag Style Guide

If you couldn’t tell from the name of this blog, I love bags. For as long as I can remember, I haven’t been able to leave the house without something to tote my “essentials” in. And by essentials, I mean everything except my entire closet. Well, that’s questionable.  For me, a purse not only completes my outfit, but it serves as a home away from home. It could be the perfect oversized tote for traveling, a sparkly clutch for a night out, or a structured bag for everyday use, but you can bet that I’ll have way more things in there than I really need.

When I came across Rue La La’s Handbag Style Guide, I knew I wanted to share it with you all. It’s not only a great summary of the types of bags that are out there (perfect if you’re on the hunt for a new Fall bag), but it also covers the very interesting history about handbags over the years. For someone who loves purses so much, it was amazing to see the way bags have evolved and the statements they have made—and not just fashion statements, but cultural and political ones, too. Through the course of history, handbags have not only been fashionable and functional, but also representative of the progression of female figures in the workforce. (Side note- the Anthropology major in me is really excited about this.)

Back to the reason you all are really here—to find out what’s in my bag. You nosy people, you. Just kidding, I’m just as curious to find out what people carry around, and I’ve watched and read my fair share of “What’s in My Bag” videos and blog posts. I prefer bags with a lot of room and pockets, so most of my bags are pretty large. And since I’m barely five feet, two inches, I’ve been asked—on multiple occasions—why I’m carrying around “luggage” or a “suitcase.” You know exactly who you are ;)

On a daily basis, this is what I typically have in my bag. (Currently I'm loving my black structured bag from DailyLook). It doesn't look like much at first glance, but I like to have separate pouches for everything so there is some sort of organization to the black hole that is often my purse. Both pouches are from Forever 21! Super cute and affordable. This one and this one are similar and just as cute. I always keep a scarf in my bag--it keeps me warm and has saved my hair from unexpected rainy days!

This pouch carries most of my cosmetic essentials. I like having multiple different lip products, an easy touch-up concealer pen, and a no-fuss felt-tip liquid eye liner. The Jergen's hand lotion is perfect for soothing dry hands and taming static or frizzy hair, and the Kate Spade roll-on perfume (a sweet gift from my fiancé) is the perfect pick-me-up scent throughout the day. The Tide-to-Go pen has saved several of my blouses from the worst of coffee stains. Best of all, everything in here can be applied on-the-go.!

This glam striped pouch holds my phone charger, headphones, and  a couple pens with some stationery. Pens are essential- taking notes, writing checks, the other day I even fixed a loose screw in my sunglasses! As for the stationery and flower post-it notes, I love leaving notes for people to make them smile, so keeping a pretty gold sharpie on hand is perfect for adding a little sparkle to someone's day.

What are your handbag essentials? Do you stick to the basics -keys, wallet, cell phone- or do you tote around more? I'd love to hear your thoughts! Comment below, and don't forget to check out Rue La La's Handbag Guide for more handbag tips!
